Some useful LINUX/UNIX commands

Compress a directory: tar -zcvf mydir.tar.gz mydir/   OR   zip -r mydir.zip mydir/

Extract a compressed directory: tar zxvf test.tar.gz   OR   unzip mydir.zip

Change permission recursively: chmod g+w mydir/ -R

Change owner recursively: chown user1 mydir/ -R

Change group recursively: chgrp grp1 mydir/ -R

Send email via command line: mail “Hello” name@email.com, press enter, write the message, and then press Ctrl+D twice.
